More commonly, the majority of Europeans making up lower social class standings would consume drinks such as ale, fruit juice, cider and mead. The nobles would drink wine and beer, wine being favourable, but the latter would only tend to be served during important celebratory occasions. What drinks did they have in medieval times? Did medieval inns have bathrooms?īaths in medieval times were usually a massive wooden tub, that would have been placed on a ground floor near a kitchen or outside, although few people had them, and inns would most certainly not have provided one in rooms. Some offered a richer variety of foods, though it would be cabarets and later traiteurs which offered the finest meals before the restaurant appeared in the 18th century. Typically, a tavern offered various roast meats, as well as simple foods like bread, cheese, herring and bacon. On these roads, every 20 miles or so, there would be a “Tabernae”…or “Tavern”. As the Roman Empire expanded into Celtic Europe they built roads to make it easier for their armies and merchants and colonists to travel. Like most things in the western world, the roots of the pub can be traced back to the Romans. With such high numbers of “saloons” the profitability of these businesses saw a sharp decline. Most taverns offered a good dinner for one shilling or less, with wine and ales as extras. By the middle of the 16th century the dining-out habit was well established among townsmen of all classes. The tavern, the predecessor of the modern restaurant, originated the custom of providing a daily meal at a fixed time.
